On Monday the leader of the majority of the Senate John Thune (RS.D.) said he believed that President Trump is “kidding with” his opponents and media with his observations on the possibility of looking for a third term in 2028 despite the 22nd amendment.
Thune told journalists that despite that of Trump insistence on the fact that “does not joke” About a third term of the White House, it is probably using the opportunity to shed light on the chatter.
“Not without a change in the Constitution,” Thune said to journalists.
“Guys, keep asking the question and I think he is probably having fun, probably joking with you,” added Thune.
The comments arrived in the wake of Trump’s Sunday observations, during which he said there are potential solutions to allow him to serve a third term.
“Many people want it to do so,” said Trump, nodded to his supporters. “But, I mean, in practice I tell them that we still have a long way to go, you know, it is very soon in the administration … I am concentrated on the current.”
When it was pressed to clarify, Trump claimed that he was not “kidding” and told the network that there are “methods you could do”.
Trump indicated one in which Vice -President Vance runs for the White House and passes his job, even if this is expressly prohibited by the twelfth amendment.
“But there are others too,” added Trump, refusing to deepen or list further options.
Any change could only be made with the support of two thirds of each Congress Chamber or two thirds of the States that define a constitutional convention to establish possible actions. Another three quarters of the states would also be necessary to ratify the amendment.
