Darren Jones gave a new role when Keir Starmer renew N. Team

Darren Jones has received a key role n. 10 from Sir Keir Starmer, while the Prime Minister shakes his Downing Street team while Parliament returns.

Jones, who spent the last year as head secretary of the Treasury, was appointed in the new role of head secretary of the Prime Minister.

He will be replaced by the treasure by James Murray, previously the secretary of the exchange at the Department, whose role will in turn be held by Dan Tomlinson, an economist who was elected for the first time as a Labor deputy in the general elections last year.

One of the communications directors of Sir Keir, James Lyons, also started after less than a year, having been appointed in October.

The appointment of a deputy like Jones to a role of backroom in Downing Street is unusual but was previously done, with Boris Johnson who appointed a parliamentarian, Steve Barclay, as his chief of staff for five months in 2022.

It arrives after a difficult summer for the government, with the news agenda dominated by asylum and migration, in the midst of a record number of small crossings of boats so far this year.

The secretary at home Yvette Cooper will hold a declaration to Parliament later, since the ministers try to regain the initiative on the matter.

Confirming the changes, a Downing Street spokesman said Jones “will directly supervise the work throughout the government to support the delivery of the prime minister’s priorities and the government change plan”.

Jones quickly increased among the ranks since he was elected for the first time as a deputy for Bristol North West in 2017.

He was the vice of the Chancellor since the work climbed to power and led the revision of the expense in June, modeling government funding for the next five years.

Jones will still participate in the toilet and there is no wider reshuffle of toilet ministers.

Also the communication team n. 10 is shaken, with also new economic skills.

Lyons had been responsible for the communication strategy of n. 10, sharing the role with Steph Driver, who remains in progress.

Monday’s renewal is not the first attempt that Sir Keir has made to restore the narrative since he took power in July last year.

The departure of his head of staff Sue Gray was followed by the director of communications Matthew Doyle last October Starting in March.

The BBC revealed last week that a key helper for Sir Keir, its main private secretary Nin Pandit, was moving on to a political role in n. 10.

Even a former deputy governor of the Bank of England, the Baroness Minouche Shafik, was hired as an economic councilor of the Prime Minister.

A Downing Street spokesman said that these reverse moves “support the government to go faster and faster in guiding economic growth and collecting living standards for everyone”.

However, the president of the conservative party Kevin Hollinrake compared the clash to “firefighters who discuss the tube while the house burns”.

“This chaotic reshuffle shows a downhill road in crisis – totally distracted by fixing the damage they did to the economy, work and small businesses,” he added.
